I loved branding projects in university so for my final major project I decided to do a branding project for a made-up, collectable toy company with a fun and bold personality.
The goals and deliverables I set for my project were a packaging design, a unique brand identity, a brand guide, social media content and a unique set of figureenes to launch the brand.
I also needed to make a quick video explaining the concept of the brand and showing off all the deliverables I made.
I looked at a range of other collectables on the market and identified that figures often had an exaggerated look and unique feature to be distinguishable. I decided on the character having big ears while having a stylised, cartoony body.
The brand guide was a core part of the project, I wanted to make sure that the brands personality be seen throughout the guide. To make sure designers and copywriters that use this guide how to use the personality.
When concepting the packaging for the brand I wanted something unique but conventional. I decided on a bespoke packaging net based off a takeout box
I chose the box to have a drawstring mechanism to close for portability as you can wear the packaging on your shoulder as these figures would be sold a conventions.
As the brand is cheeky I wanted the promotional material to reflect that.
The brand is somewhat exclusive so to emphasise this the brand only uses one social media platform to communicate with the fanbase. I wanted the content to be interactive and a little cryptic to showcase the mascot's/brand's personality.
Only breaking their radio silence when theres a new figure drop, upcoming conventions or major updates on the brand with a if you know, you know attitude.
One of my favourite parts of this project was to see my 3D models come to life! These were printed within the university and were finished by me.
The illustrations of the figures had a lot of character and I wanted to keep that in their 3D mediums too. To do that I used a marker to sketch on the outlines, the outlines didn't need to be perfect due to the nature of the brand however if I got the figures professionally manufactured I would have gone with a more polished finish.
I felt like the brand was lacking in collaterals so I decided to make some fun stickers to accompany the figures when sold. I reused the artwork from the figure illustrations and gave them an outline with the brand's yellow colour.
I really enjoyed this project from university and it made me want to pursue branding and packaging design. I wish I had more time to polish this brand but I think I've made the groundwork for a very charismatic brand with plenty room for expansion.
